Good Food with Southern Hospitality

South Arkansas is home to some legendary and historical dining experiences. One such establishment is White House Cafe on Adams Avenue in Camden, the oldest restaurant in Arkansas. Built in 1907, it is known for award-winning steaks and classics like chicken fried steak, meatloaf and hamburgers. The lounge area is a great watering hole with the largest selection of imported beer in South Arkansas. The pool table adds to the vibe of the space and sports fans can find their game on the television. White House Cafe is one of those tried-and-true establishments where you can depend on good food and Southern hospitality. It’s always going to be the same, on every visit, and you wouldn’t want it any other way. One visit here and you’ll see why they have been named a finalist in the 2018 Arkansas Food Hall of Fame.

Magnolia Bake Shop is the oldest bakery in Arkansas. Opened in 1928 in Magnolia, it’s been in the family for 90 years. It got its start in cakes, particularly striped cake, whipped cream coconut cake and German chocolate cake, fruit bars, iced butter cookies and Danish cookies. The legacy lives on. Everything is made from scratch each day, and features almost every variety of cake and cookie, you could have found generations ago.

Another notable treat is the spudnut, similar to a doughnut but with a potato base. The Spudnut Shoppe has been an El Dorado favorite for more than 60 years and is also available in Magnolia.

Minute Man is another El Dorado landmark. The burger chain got its start in Little Rock in 1948, but this is the last remaining location in the state.

When it comes to eclectic dining, there are some other well-known establishments. Located in a stately building listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Postmasters Grill in Camden is famous for its selection of steaks. Fayray’s in El Dorado is renowned for upscale dining, award-winning lunch and refined dinner entrees like duck, ribeye, filet, short rib, salmon and grouper. New on the scene is the farm-to-table restaurant The Griffin in El Dorado’s Murphy Arts District is already establishing itself as the place to go for fine dining, cocktails and live music.
